Look before you leap

I used to grind my teeth when my mother recited what I considered banal quotations.

"You'd better look before you leap," she'd warn. I could have used her advice this morning when I was about to set a reusable shopping bag on the stove. Those smooth surfaced stoves are a great work surface when they are cool.

Mom was right. Again!

The bag bottom melted onto the surface and a plastic container of spinach was deformed by the heat.

The good news is: smooth surfaced stove-tops can be cleaned of melted-on plastic with just a razor blade and made good as new. Only the bag was a total loss.

I love the smooth-tops, but you do have to be careful. I'm glad nothing caught on fire and you were able to get the gunk off the stove.

Good warning. I have smooth top as well and have melted many plastic items. They are deceptive. Years ago when my cat Merlin was more spry, he jumped on to the stove and I had to rush him to the vet.
