The desperation of lost treasure

My heart nearly stopped, breathing halted as I stared at my wrist. My gold bracelet... GONE! How could that be? When did I last see it?

My mind raced as I thought back to the errands I had run; the bank, coffee shop, Wal-Mart (I was all over that store browsing), gas station, where else?

Had I snagged it on anything? I couldn't remember any tug at my wrist. I couldn't remember when I had actually seen it last. Maybe I lost it days ago, riding my bike, walking the dog, in the fitness center or pool. I took a half-hearted look around the room and silently kissed it goodbye, hoping the finder would appreciate its beauty and value. Maybe it would be the find of a lifetime for someone, a small moment of good fortune to bless an unfortunate life.

Then, on a hunch, I tipped over my favorite chair. Voila! There it was, under the chair where it must have slipped from my wrist, into the space between the arm and seat, and onto the carpet. What good fortune kept it from falling into some obscure, sealed place between the seat cushion and the springs?

As I put it into jewelry into cleaning solution I realized that this was a gentle lesson I needed to learn. How easy it is to take precious things and people in our lives for granted. Sometimes, we need to come close to losing them to remember how much they are cherished.

It is easy to take things for granted and people too. I guess it's human nature, but to me that's not a good enough excuse! I work at cherishing every minute and every person that is in my life. Am I perfect? Far from it! But I keep plugging away.

Wonderful post! There's nothing like the feeling of relief when you find something that you thought was lost, like those missing car keys or glasses or a special piece of jewelry. Needless to say, our friends and family members are even more precious and worth holding on to!
